  • What is this  series about?

A boy goes missing in a small town and while his friends and mum start to search for him each one in their way, a strange girl appears and strange things start to happen in the small town….

  • Why should you watch it?

If you are a kid of the 80s (or not so a kid), this is definitely your series to watch. The aesthetic is similar to those brilliant adventure movies from the 80s like ET or the Goonies. As for the story, we could say it’s a mix between The X Files, Poltergeist and ET (kind of). First of all, this is not a horror series, although you might get a scare once in a while, but is more of a thriller. Something strange is going on, and since the first second you might guess what is it, but you won’t understand what really is it until about half of the season. The season consists only of 8 episodes, so it is easier to watch it in a row, as once you start watching one you won’t be able to put it down until you are down; and I am talking from experience.

Then we have the actors, all kids are brilliant in their characters, you really feel like flying with them on their bikes. As for the adults, Winona Ryder is back into action and what a way to come back!! She plays the stressed mother whose kid has gone missing, although at sometimes it looks like she is overacting, she is simply wonderful and makes us remember on why she was one of the best way down in the 90s. Do we hear a Golden Globe nomination? Maybe.

Fantastic Netflix original work (finally!). Not a sequel, not a movie adaptation, but something original. Yes, influenced by Stephen King’s works and that 80 style which makes us feel nostalgic, which might be one of the incentives to watch it, so please watch it, you won’t regret it! Just stop what you are doing and go binge-watch it! It’s only 8 hours, one Sunday are you are done! Go for it!

  • Did you know?

– The shed where Will disappears has an upside down horseshoe above the door, which signifies bad luck.

– Mike nicknames Eleven “Elf”. Elf also means “eleven” in German

– Of the many nods to Stephen King in this series, in one of the episodes the kids travels a significant stretch along the railroad tracks. Most of the story in Stand by Me movie (or in the The Body novella it is based on), is about some kids travelling along the railroad tracks.

– The Hawkins Police Department vehicles and uniforms are identical to those used in Jaws and Jaws 2. This includes the Chief’s tan uniform, Amity Island triangle shaped patch, and beige SUV that was worn/used by Roy Scheider’s character. This also includes the blue uniforms and trooper/sheriff style hats worn by the patrolman, which also matches the Amity Island Police uniforms from the Jaws films.

– When Will wins one of Dustin’s comics in the first episode, he asks for X-Men 134. In this comic, a psychic know as Jean Grey unleashes the Dark Phoenix for the first time after being tortured.
