  • Why should you watch it?

There are as many lovers as many haters of Almodóvar’s movie. If you are a lover this one is a  must. If you are a hater, you could give it a chance. This movie is indeed a drama, something that lately we didn’t see in his movies, but is not that kind of drama that we are expecting, with the kind of characters that pop into our minds when we heard the words “Almodovar’s film”. No; this movie has no queer characters, nor sexual scandals, nor dark family relationships (at least not that dark, not the kind of we are expecting). It’s a plain drama, nothing out of the ordinary, but a drama nonetheless. Which makes me miss this director’s trademark. Because that is what makes his movies so special, but don not get confused, even though there isn’t anything SO shocking, it is a movie worth your time.

Both Suárez and Ugarte excel in their performance of the same character at different stages of her life. The first the adult one and the second the young version of the first. They have entered the Almodóvar’s women club and they have earned it with their performances, about a woman who has suffered her whole life and about her relationship with her daughter. Something that feels near home.

On of the things I miss in this movie is the music. The is no music at all, except for one song. Once of the things that Pedro has too much used us too are his musical numbers, out of the blue, or not so out of the blue, some characters might start singing or dancing. But we must remember that this movie’s original tittle was “Silencio” (Silence), so the absence of music is justified as for the topic that is depicts.

This movie is not “All about my mother”, nor “Talk to Her”, it is something more plain, more normal, just a drama movie about women, as we all as the men in their lives, but mostly is a story about a mother and her relationship with her only daughter.

For the new comers, here are some Almodóvar movies which I strongly recommend, all about women, with women and their men:

  • All about my mother (Todo sobre mi Madre) [1999] – Winner of the Oscar for best foreign movie
  • Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios) [1988] – The movie that made Pedro a well-known director worldwide
  • Volver [2006] – A dark comedy where Pedro goes back to his origins
  • Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) [2002] – Winner of the Oscar for best original screenplay.

  • Did you know?

– Pedro Almodóvar’s 20th feature film.

– Based on “Destiny”, “Soon” and “Silence” from Alice Munro.

– The movie was previously named “Silencio”, but they decided to change it into “Julieta” as not to be confused with “Silence”.
